Research

&

Scholarship

The research project(s) I have undertaken has merged educational methods and chemistry.

Project 1: Flipped Instructional Model (under progress)

I developed and carried out a research project over a two year period to understand student perceptions and performance in a flipped classroom. The purpose was to understand the nuances of a flipped classroom and why it is a successful method for students raised in a technology enriched environment. Overall, outcomes across all courses were satisfactory. The method was well received by the students because of the higher level of independence it offered. Results of the research were presented at regional and national conferences.

Project 2: Cognitive Complexity (commence soon)

Another area of research in which I am interested is cognitive complexity, stemming from complexity theory. Cognitive complexity is associated with task characteristics that increase information load, as well as with the information diversity contained in the task. Chemistry is a complex subject with a diversity of inter-related concepts. Understanding students’ cognitive complexity toward a concept (task) will shed light on how to better tailor instruction that has varying levels of complexity.
